Teakhaus Review – Durable, Beautiful, and Sustainably Made

After I wrote about “Why Wooden Cutting Boards are Best“, I was contacted by Madeline from Teakhaus. She said Teakhaus couldn’t agree more and offered to send me a board to test and review. After years of use, here’s what I’ve learned about the company, the board, and why it’s earned a place in our kitchen.

What is Teakhaus?

Teakhaus is the cutting board brand that grew out of the original Proteak wood operations. While the parent company, Proteak Renewable Forestry, still manages FSC-certified teak plantations, the boards themselves are now branded as Teakhaus. The mission? Create high-quality kitchen tools from sustainably grown teak that are as beautiful as they are functional.

Why Teak is a Great Wood for the Kitchen

Teak is a tropical hardwood prized for its natural oils, which make it water-resistant, durable, and naturally antibacterial. It has been used for centuries in boat building and high-end furniture — and it makes a fantastic surface for food prep. It’s gentle on knives and doesn’t easily warp or crack with proper care.

Sustainably Grown and Responsibly Made

The teak used in Teakhaus boards is grown on sustainable, organic plantations in Mexico, on reclaimed ranch lands in the state of Nayarit. These plantations were started in 2000 and are FSC® certified, meaning they meet rigorous standards for environmental and social responsibility.

Here’s a note from the company:

“These ideal growing conditions allow Proteak to cultivate its trees without the use of irrigation or fertilizer, thereby producing top-quality teak with minimal impact on the environment.”

Teakhaus boards are crafted with a focus on zero waste, and the company supports fair wages and ethical labor practices in regions that typically have limited economic opportunity. So when you buy a Teakhaus board, you’re also supporting a more sustainable and equitable system.

Hands-On with the Teakhaus Cutting Board

Let’s talk about the board itself.

The model I received is 20 x 15 inches with a juice groove and cut-out hand grips on each end. It’s hefty — about 1.5 inches thick — and feels extremely solid. (Be careful not to drop it on your toes!)

The board has a warm, richly varied grain, showcasing everything from near-black to pale gold tones. It’s honestly one of the prettiest boards I’ve ever owned. They also offer edge grain cutting boards, which are also stunning (shown below).

We’ve had this board for 12 years, and it’s held up beautifully. Despite heavy use, the surface remains smooth, and the high oil content helps prevent staining or odor retention. The board arrived pre-coated with mineral oil and beeswax, ready to use right out of the box.

And this isn’t just my opinion.

This is the kind of board you give as a gift — and expect it to last for decades. If you don’t have a local woodworker nearby, Teakhaus is a great option to vote with your dollars for a product that supports:

Final Thoughts

I didn’t receive anything for this review beyond the board itself, and I’m glad I had the chance to test it. Teakhaus is making products I feel good about using and recommending — built to last, responsibly made, and a pleasure to use.

If you’re looking to upgrade your cutting board, this one’s worth considering.

  1. I would use the board to cut up all the veggies that we eat. We do recycle all our aluminum and compost.

  2. I cant live without my cutting board. I use one side to cut on and one side to roll out dough. I save all vegie scraps when cutting to make vegetable broth.

  3. I have a wood cutting board and a small bamboo one, but this would be (by a mile) the prettiest board I’ve ever owned if I won! I’d use it to chop piles of veggies for our meals. I kind of love having the piles of chopped things all ready to push into a skillet at the right time…pretty peppers, onions, minced garlic, tomatoes, squash, etc…just looks so bountiful and beautiful and on this board it would be even more stunning!

  5. I think I would use this cutting board for almost everything! But it sounds perfect for cutting up a watermelon.

  6. My husband and I host large gatherings almost monthly where we serve smoked brisket, chickens, and baby back ribs. (The smoked chicken is my FAVORITE) Something as beautiful as this would be so great to be able to use. And the fact that it is sustainable is awesome!

  8. So beautifully crafted! I love to cook and I would display this in my kitchen as a beautiful display of craftsmanship when I wasn’t using it. It would be a cherished addition to my kitchen that I would love to pass on to my daughter when she gets married one day. She has helped me cook and bake since she could walk; she’s a teenager now. The ones we use now are plastic and although they protect the counter surfaces they do not have the endurance or antibacterial properties that your product does. My boards get “fuzzy” after so much use that I have to replace them frequently because I do not want them to hold on to bacteria or food particles even after washing. I would LOVE to have a beautiful Proteak cutting board in my home! They are a work of ART!

  9. I would love to own this cutting board! It’s beautiful and would be a great additional cooking tool. I have always preferred wood cutting boards to use for everything from food prep to rolling out pastries and tortillas. They don’t dull your knives and stay sanitary. I keep my fruit and veggi cuttings as well as egg shells and coffee grounds for composting. Nothing goes to waste!

  10. The timing is perfect! I’ve hunted for the best cutting board for years. My last try was with bamboo – not bad, but doesn’t last that long: the first one warped and split, the second hasn’t been bad but also developing cracks and I’d worn through the top layer. The teak board looks excellent. I use my cutting board constantly, primarily for veggies, sometimes fruits, occasionally [rarely] nuts. We make every effort to live harmoniously with nature, recycling everything possible, avoiding packaging where possible, and not living based on consumerism. We have a small organic garden. My cutting board has pride of place on the counter and I’m hoping it will be your cutting board. Thanks.

  11. What a beautiful cutting board! It would be displayed & All my chopping would be done on this board. We try to be as green as possible. From buying in bulk to choosing sustainable companies to buy from, using re-usable shopping bags, recycling and composting.
