I'm going to talk about topical psoriasis treatments, even though I found that in my case, until I changed my diet, topical treatments were only minimally effective. Even the pricey stuff prescribed by the dermatologist only took the edge off – but it did do that, and that bought me some time to make the changes that really addressed the underlying problems. Early on I experimented with a variety of over the counter psoriasis creams, homemade herbal creams and essential oil creams, and different creams I could buy online. Now I take a soothing bath one or more times a week, and spot treat with just a couple of things that work well for me. I'll go through the options by category. [Read more…]
One of the most fundamental alternative psoriasis treatments I used was to change my state of mind.
When my skin went crazy last year, I was filled with a sense of hopelessness and despair. I knew that my mom's skin had become inflamed and caused her over 10 years of misery, and some of the best doctor's in the country had been able to do nothing lasting for her. I have always been told how much alike my mom and I were, and I *knew* I was likely to endure the same fate. After all, if over 20 doctors at Mayo Clinic couldn't solve the problem, what chance did I have? This mindset contributed to my misery, as I saw no future but one filled with suffering. [Read more…]
My Anti-Candida, Anti-Psoriasis Diet was cobbled together from several different books and internet sources and trial and error. This has been working well for me, but every person is different, so listen to your body. Please check with your doctor or trained health care provider before making major diet changes if you have a serious medical condition. In addition to diet, I have also used topical psoriasis treatments, herbs and other complimentary therapies, which I'll discuss in more detail in upcoming posts. [Read more…]
Candida – I didn't really know much about it, other than that it could cause yeast infections in your tucks and folds and private areas. I had no idea that it would change my life forever – and may be affecting a lot of other people who knew as little as I used to know. I'm jumping ahead of the original timeline I set out for myself in the Psoriasis series, but this is important. I tried many other things before I figured out this piece of the puzzle, but without this knowledge, I couldn't heal completely.
In this post I'm going to explain what candida is, what health problems may be linked to candida overgrowth and how I discovered candida was a problem for me. Next week we'll tackle how to get it under control. [Read more…]
Those who've been following along know a little about my personal experience with psoriatic skin from the article “Psoriasis – The Year My Face Exploded“. When I went for my annual checkup last September, the doctor also noted that down the road my skin psoriasis could lead to psoriatic arthritis (where the psoriasis attacks your joints) – not a path I want to take. It really struck me as strange, how matter of fact she was about something that was really screwing up my life and could possibly get even worse, but I guess one develops a level of personal detachment over time. Given than it was my health on the line, I have a more urgent and vested interest. One of the first things I tried to figure out was possible psoriasis causes, since I figured if I can eliminate the cause, eventually my skin should clear, right? [Read more…]
