PurifiCup Water Filter Review

PurifiCup BPA free personal water filter uses nanosilver technology, an ion exchange resin, an absolute 1 micron filter and an activated carbon filter.

As part of our ongoing preparedness discussion, this week we’ve got a review and giveaway featuring the PurifiCup® water filter.

What is the PurifiCup® Water Filter?

The PurifiCup water filter is a compact, easy to use water filter for personal use.

Each orange tap water filter provides up to 24 gallons (330 cups, approximately 91 liters) of pure water. The green and purple filters, designed for natural water sources, filter approximately 12 gallons.  The PurifiCup’s absolute 1 micron filter  (recommended by the CDC) will more consistently remove bacteria such as cryptosporidium (Crypto) than a nominal filter.

PurifiCup’s patented design uses a three stage filter technology:

  1. Ion exchange resin: Removes heavy metals (lead, copper, cadmium, mercury, etc) and calcareous ions (magnesium, calcium).
  2. Activated carbon filter: Removes chlorine and organic compounds such as THM (Trihalomethanes, many of which are carcinogenic), organic solvents and pesticides.  Reduces fluoride.
  3. Silver membrane and Absolute 1 micron filter:  Silver is naturally anti-bacterial and anti-fungal.  This membrane eliminates 99.9% of the pathogens in tap water, including E.coli, giardia, cryptosporidium. The silver membrane is located on the inlet and exit of the filter circulation channel to prevent contamination from entering the filter cartridge. The absolute 1 micron filter provides an additional layer of protection against bacteria.

What’s really handy and unique to me about the PurifiCup Filter is how it can quickly and easily be used to fill just about any standard container, such as a canteen or water bottle.  Heck, you could even fill an ice cube tray with no fuss.  Simply assemble and prime the unit (the filter needs to be soaked to get out the air bubbles).  Then attach the filter to the small cup or container of your choice.  Fill the large cup and lock it onto the filter, and watch the water filter through, fresh and clean, in just over a minute.  When you’re finished, the parts assemble like a set of Russian nesting dolls to neatly store until needed again.  You can see how easy it is to use in the video below.

Where can I buy a PurifiCup?

The filters are available online and at Bed Bath and Beyond, Sears, Camping World, The Sportsman’s Guide, Survival Store and Basic Living.

Is the PurifiCup BPA free?

PurifiCup water filters are free of BPA (Bisphenol A) and Phthalates (pronounced THAL-ates).  BPA may be linked to increased risk of heart disease, intestinal damage and reproductive issues.  Phthalates are endocrine disruptors, and have been linked to symptoms such as low sperm counts, disruption of genital formation and premature breast development in young girls.

What does the filtered water taste like?

Pretty good.  The folks at PurifiCup aim for a slightly alkaline end product (pH 7.2), which is supposed to be more palatable for most people.  Testing it on our unfiltered well water (the orange filter I tested is designed for tap water), it took out the sulfur stink very well.

I am a PurifiCup affiliate, so should you choose to purchase a filter through a link on my site, I do receive a small affiliate payment.  I received nothing from PurifiCup for writing this review, other than the filter.

P.S.: Sorry I’ve been missing for a bit. I had some family matters that required extra attention last week.  (My husband was in a car accident, but is okay.  The car is not.)  Family comes first.  Hopefully things will be more settled this week.  Planning another Preparedness link up and Weekly Weeder post featuring quackgrass, the weed everyone loves to hate.  (Quackgrass can be used medicinally, BTW.)  We’ve been busy with spring planting of cold tolerant crops.  It froze again last night.  Looking forward to rhubarb recipes and other spring goodies.  We’ll also be having the official launch of Common Sense Health, my first e-book, in the coming weeks.

I’d use my filter cup all the time! I (unfortunately) am on city water where we currently live so I’d use it at home all the time and also at work so I’ve always got fresh and healthy water to drink!

  2. Kim says

I already carry one filter with us when we travel, especially with extended family. For some reason we tend to end up in places with horrible tasting water. So a water filter comes in real handy.

  9. Shasta says

This would be great.. There is little water in AZ where we live and what we do find we could purify it with this. Thank you

I’d definitely keep this in the car for when I travel…you never know what the quality of the water is in unfamiliar places.

  11. Ashley says

If I had it, I would use the PurifiCup pretty much everywhere I go, especially for when I travel or go camping and hiking (which I love to do!). I am sensitive to a lot of chemicals in water, so it would be wonderful to be able to use this portable filter to clean any questionable water and not have to worry about getting sick anymore.

  12. says

Woot! I’d love something like this for my “go bag”, which we keep in the car or when we go walking or hiking. Having a way of providing safe, clean water for myself and my family would be so wonderful!

  13. Stephanie Young says

We are working hard on our “prepping.” A PurifiCup Water Filter would be a great addition to our family readiness!

I would take this on my vacation when we go traveling, This would be awesome for it. I am scared to drink the water when we go so I will have to purchase bottled water in plastics YUK

  15. Elaine Brock says

I would definitely keep one in each family member’s bug out bag and another in our car since we travel a lot in the summer

  16. kimela says

I’d use this anywhere. It looks nicely portable, easy to use. Definitely it’d be kept in the bag that goes from the house to car for out and about use and then comes back into the home for home use.

  17. Christina says

Awesome Giveaway. I would love to try this and see if I should get one for the whole family ( would these make goos Christmas Presents?).

  18. jess says

I am not sure where I would begin. I would love to use it to help water my garden. I don’t think my veggies like chlorinated water, but I am not sure. But for very simple starters, perhaps for my kids, who say our tap water tastes funny.

I bet that would help them alot.

  19. cece says

I would use this everywhere! I am often on the go. It would be nice to have some comfort knowing that the water I take with me is well filtered.

  20. linda barksdale says

i would use mine in my yucky plastic water bottle at work. it is the only kind we are allowed out on the floor. and believe me, it gets very hot in the warehouse & you need to consume mega quanities of water to keep on your feet. i detest the “plastic” & hurried refills from the warm fountains. this would be soooo great, & ease my mind, not to mention the healthful benefit. thankyou.

  21. Laura Pintor says

I would definitely take this down to the ‘big’ city when we visit our daughter. I hate city water!

  22. Rhonda Swetnam says

I love these! I would use this cup daily and take it with me everywhere! Thanks for this opportunity to win one!

  23. Tessa says

This would be great!! The filter water bottle I have right now is almost done for. I’ve replaced the filter so many times, the bottle itself is about to wear out.
